The Madonna of the Sea or Virgin of the Sea, the “Madonna del Mare” (1475-1480) owes its name to the seascape that is seen behind the Virgin.

Some experts attribute it to Sandro Botticelli, others to Filippino Lippi.

It is, in any case, a very touching and beautiful work.

We see the Virgin, pensive, with a slightly leaning head while the Child Jesus on her lap holds a pomegranate, the symbolic fruit of Christ's passion and blood on the cross.

In a heralding gesture of the crucifixion, we see the pomegranate already opened in one of Jesus's hands while he holds from the other the grains that he extracted from it and some of which escapes him.

The mother and child are there, in front of us, and at the same time, we feel that they are both already elsewhere.
