Palazzo Vecchio and its Tower, the Signoria in Florence

Palazzo Vecchio and its Tower, the Signoria in Florence in Italy
Palazzo Vecchio
Several names could be given to the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence: Ducal Palace, Palazzo de la Piazza, Palazzo of Priors, but it was above all the seat of power in Florence centuries.

When the Medici settled in Palazzo Pitti, on the other side of the Arno, it became the “old” palace, hence its current name Palazzo Vecchio.

It dominates Florence with its high Arnolfo tower and its imposing mass on Piazza della Signoria.

A medieval palace built-in 1299 and then undergoes many transformations, including that of the Hall of the Grand Council, the Hall of the Five Cents, in Italian, the “Sala dei Cinquecento”.

Palazzo Vecchio is steeped in history; it is a place of power and splendour and a somewhat sinister place with the cell of its tower where Cosimo the Elder was locked up, or Jerome Savonarola before being burned at stake on Piazza de la Signoria, just below.

Today it is one of the places you must visit in Florence to understand its history and appreciate the many works of art it contains, frescoes, paintings and sculptures of all beauty.
